Abuja – April 8, 2025 – The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party, led by Chairman Julius Abure, has issued a stern warning to its former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, threatening him with tougher sanctions if he engages in actions deemed harmful to the party’s unity and integrity.
This resolution was made during the party’s NEC meeting held at its National Secretariat in Abuja on Monday.
In a statement signed by Abure, the NEC urged Obi to avoid activities that could destabilize the party. “NEC in session cautions the former presidential candidate not to take part in any act capable of undermining the peace, unity, and integrity of the party. If found culpable, NEC will not hesitate to impose a stiffer penalty,” the statement read.
The NEC also reviewed the performance of Honourable Victor Adam Ogene, leader of the Labour Party Caucus in the House of Representatives, accusing him of dereliction of duty. The council noted a lack of visible party leadership and poor representation in the lower chamber under Ogene’s leadership.
As a result, Hon. Barrister Ben Etanabene has been appointed as the new caucus leader. NEC has directed the National Working Committee (NWC) to inform the relevant authorities and ensure the proper handover of party properties and financial contributions still held by Ogene.
“The party will take all necessary steps to retrieve its belongings, including funds held by the former caucus leader,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic values, the Labour Party assured Nigerians of its readiness to offer quality leadership, security, economic growth, and judicial independence if given the opportunity.
The party emphasized its stand as a political body with internal democracy and promised to continue working towards national development and good governance.
