EFCC Arrests TikTok Influencer for Naira Abuse Challenge

By Grace Chigbu

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a social media content creator, Muhammed Sa’ad, in Kaduna for allegedly abusing the naira. The arrest followed a viral video where Mr. Sa’ad was seen spraying and stepping on naira notes, in clear violation of Nigerian law.

According to a statement released by the EFCC on Monday, the suspect posted the video on his TikTok and Instagram accounts under the username @youngcee0066. In the video, which was recorded in Hausa, he reportedly dared the EFCC to arrest him.

Following this challenge, EFCC operatives tracked him down to Tudun Wada, Kaduna State, where he was taken in for questioning. The commission confirmed that the video has since been taken down from his social media platforms.

The EFCC stated that Mr. Sa’ad will face formal charges after the completion of investigations. His actions are said to contravene Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which prohibits the spraying, dancing on, or matching of naira notes. Violators face a fine of at least ₦50,000 or a minimum jail term of six months.

This arrest is part of EFCC’s ongoing crackdown on individuals who abuse the national currency. The commission has recently prosecuted several public figures, including social media influencer Bobrisky and government official Kelly Okungbowa, for similar offenses.

Despite these high-profile arrests, some critics argue that the EFCC’s approach appears selective. However, the commission maintains that its actions are part of broader efforts to protect the integrity of the naira and enforce financial laws.

EFCC reiterated its commitment to holding all offenders accountable, regardless of their social status or online following.
