Three Dismissed Soldiers Appeal Over Unfair Trial, Seek Justice

Three former Nigerian soldiers dismissed over missing weapons during a deadly bandit ambush in Zamfara State have appealed to the Nigerian Army, claiming their court martial trial was unfair and lacked sufficient evidence.

Lance Corporals Sadiq Saidu, Demian Danjuma, and Galadima Awyetu said they were members of Combat Team 9, Sector 2, deployed under Operation Hadarin Daji. On December 3, 2021, they were ambushed during a patrol, resulting in the loss of several military weapons and vehicles.

Despite their defense efforts and immediate reporting of the incident, the soldiers were arrested more than a month later and dismissed after a military court martial ruling on May 18, 2023. Their dismissal was confirmed on April 28, 2025.

The soldiers insist no evidence was presented to prove they were responsible for the lost weapons. They explained that Major O.M. Ibilaye, their commanding officer who ordered the transfer of the support weapons to another vehicle, was acquitted, while they were dismissed under similar circumstances.

“We were punished for following orders, while our OC was commended,” one soldier said. They are now appealing for a review of their case, citing procedural errors and a miscarriage of justice.

Legal representatives from Joe-Gwaske Law Chambers have formally appealed to the Chief of Army Staff, highlighting the soldiers’ good service records and urging fair treatment in line with their commanding officer’s acquittal.

The law firm called on military authorities to recognize the losses as risks of combat and consider reinstating the soldiers.

The dismissed soldiers emphasized their loyalty and commitment to Nigeria, asking for a second chance to serve the country.
