President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on all Nigerians to take collective action in eliminating child bullying and ensuring safe spaces for children across the country. His remarks came as part of the 2025 National Children’s Day celebrations themed “Stand Up, Speak Up: Building a Bullying-Free Generation.”
In a statement issued Tuesday, Tinubu described the theme as “timely and crucial,” urging citizens to build a culture where every Nigerian child is safe, respected, and heard—both offline and online.
“Violence, bullying, and neglect have no place in the Nigeria of today,” the president declared.
He cited alarming figures, including a global statistic that one in three children face bullying regularly, and 65% of school-aged Nigerian children have reportedly experienced physical, psychological, or social aggression.
“This is unacceptable. A child who learns in fear cannot learn well. A child who grows in fear cannot grow right,” he said.
Tinubu assured Nigerians that under his Renewed Hope Agenda, his administration is prioritising child safety. He highlighted the implementation of Nigeria’s National Plan of Action on Ending Violence Against Children (2024–2030), which outlines a multi-sector strategy backed by proper funding.
He also referenced steps taken to review key laws like the Child Rights Act (2003) and Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (2015) to strengthen protection measures, including against cyberbullying under the Cybercrime Act
“Thirty-six states have now domesticated the Child Rights Act. But laws alone are not enough—we need national unity and responsibility.”
The president announced that efforts are underway to expand the Child Protection Information Management System (CPIMS) to track abuse cases in real time. He also applauded the Ministry of Women’s Affairs for leading grassroots campaigns and training frontline responders.
“You, our children, are the future leaders, innovators, and change-makers of Nigeria,” Tinubu concluded. “We will continue to protect your rights, nurture your dreams, and create an environment where you can grow with pride and dignity.”
