IPOB lawyer calls to end Wike’s costly media chats

June 3, 2025 | Abuja, Nigeria— Ifeanyi Ejiofor, a human rights lawyer and counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has called on President Bola Tinubu to halt the monthly media chats held by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

In a press statement released Tuesday, Ejiofor criticized the media chats as extravagant and wasteful, accusing the minister of using public funds to grandstand on national issues without delivering real value.

He expressed concern over the hundreds of millions of naira allocated monthly for these media appearances, a move he described as unconscionable amid Nigeria’s soaring inflation, stagnant wages, and widespread poverty.

Ejiofor argued that the funds spent on these media events could instead support emergency relief for flood victims, refurbish schools, equip rural clinics, or sustain nutrition programs for internally displaced persons.

“The optics are disheartening. Nigerians are crying out for competent governance, prudent spending, and people-centred leadership,” the statement said.

He urged President Tinubu to take urgent action by stopping the wasteful spending and refocusing government priorities on service delivery and the public good.
