Kalu accuses political elite of backing Boko Haram insurgency

June 3, 2025 | Abuja, Nigeria — Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North and former Abia State governor, has accused powerful figures within Nigeria’s political class of sponsoring Boko Haram to undermine President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kalu claimed the resurgence of terrorism is not merely a security failure but a calculated political campaign.

“The political class is behind Boko Haram,” Kalu stated. “They are using terrorism as a tool to fight Tinubu, just like they did with past administrations.”

His remarks came following a deadly Boko Haram attack in Mairari village, Borno State, where nine passengers were killed by an improvised explosive device. The attack has renewed national focus on Nigeria’s ongoing insurgency challenges.

Kalu identified the “political class” as a coalition of politicians, wealthy businessmen, and senior civil servants whose motive is seizing power rather than economic gain.

“This is a political war,” he said. “Some of them aren’t after money, they’re after power. They want to tear down the system just to grab control.”

Calling the security crisis “politically induced,” Kalu urged Nigerians to remain vigilant against forces seeking to destabilize the nation for political gain.

In closing, he appealed for national unity beyond political and ethnic divisions, emphasizing the need to prioritize the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.

“If we consider ourselves friends and patriots, we should care about the ordinary Nigerian,” Kalu said. “We must work together to build a better country.
