A serving police officer identified as Inspector Innocent Ishaku has been arrested in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, over his alleged involvement in the vandalism and theft of electricity cables in the Demekpe area.
According to reports gathered, the arrest was made in the early hours of Tuesday, June 10, 2025, around 4:00 a.m., when local community vigilantes caught Ishaku red-handed during the act. The officer was allegedly working alongside two known community members, Isa and Mohammed, who initially escaped from the scene but were later apprehended based on the confession of the arrested officer.
Inspector Ishaku, who has served in the Benue State command of the Nigeria Police Force for over ten years following his transfer from Abuja, reportedly admitted during interrogation to having participated in multiple cases of cable theft across various areas, including Wadata.
In his confession, Ishaku allegedly stated, *“I have been in Benue State for 10 years, and yes, I’ve been involved in cable theft activities, especially in the Wadata area. I regret my actions.”
The arrest led to the recovery of key items including bundles of electricity cables, F connectors, and a police identification card bearing Ishaku’s photograph and name, with the ID number 309976.
Local authorities transferred the suspects to the D Division Police Station in Makurdi for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC), responsible for electricity supply in the region, expressed strong concerns over the increasing spate of cable vandalism in Benue State. Speaking to newsmen, the Head of Corporate Services, Dr. Adakole Elijah, confirmed the incident and called for stricter enforcement of laws against vandalism.
Dr. Elijah stated, “This is a very disturbing development. We are experiencing a surge in cases of electricity infrastructure vandalism, which is not only affecting power supply but also endangering lives. We urge security agencies to take decisive actions.”
He further added, “It is even more shocking to learn that a serving police officer is involved in this act. It compromises the trust the public has in the security forces.”
Meanwhile, when contacted, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Udeme Edet, said she had not yet been officially briefed on the case but promised to investigate and release a statement soon.
“I have not been informed about such an arrest at the time of your call,” she said. “However, I will look into it and get back with confirmed details.”
The arrest of a law enforcement officer in connection to such a serious crime has sparked widespread discussions among residents, who are demanding thorough investigations and transparent prosecution.
As investigations continue, the authorities have assured that due process will be followed and justice will be served, regardless of the suspect’s position or affiliation.
This incident has once again raised critical questions about the involvement of insiders in sabotage acts that continue to cripple power infrastructure across Nigeria.
