Boko Haram Attacks Military Base in Borno, Kills Soldier and Civilian

On Monday, October 14, 2024, Boko Haram insurgents launched a deadly attack on a military base in Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State, killing a Nigerian soldier and a civilian woman. Security sources confirmed to Sahara Reporters that the terrorists targeted the base known as “Tango 19” under the control of the 112 battalion.

According to the sources, the soldier was shot dead during the early morning attack. The civilian, reportedly the soldier’s girlfriend, was also killed. She had allegedly been brought into the camp secretly by the soldier the night before the assault.

“An incident happened early this morning to our troops at 112 battalion in Mafa LGA, Borno State. Boko Haram attacked our Tango 19 and killed one soldier,” one of the sources revealed. “They also killed one girl the soldier secretly brought to the camp last night,” the source added.

The attack highlights the ongoing threat of Boko Haram in Nigeria’s North-East region, where the insurgency has persisted for nearly two decades. The Nigerian military has been involved in continuous operations to combat the terrorist group, which has been responsible for widespread violence, destruction, and displacement of millions of people in the region.

Efforts to reach Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the army spokesperson, for further comments on the incident were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

Boko Haram, a terrorist group that has been waging war against the Nigerian state since 2009, continues to carry out attacks on military and civilian targets in the North-East, despite ongoing efforts by the military to curtail their activities. The group is notorious for its violent tactics, which include bombings, kidnappings, and attacks on villages and government institutions.

This attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have underscored the security challenges in the region. The Nigerian government and military have faced criticism over the years for their handling of the insurgency, with many calling for more effective strategies to protect both soldiers and civilians.

As Boko Haram remains a persistent threat, security experts stress the importance of better intelligence and improved military infrastructure to prevent such attacks. The Nigerian government has also been urged to engage in deeper regional cooperation with neighboring countries to counter the insurgency, which has spread across borders into Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.

The tragic deaths of the soldier and the civilian serve as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by both military personnel and civilians living in conflict zones. As the insurgency continues, the Nigerian government faces increasing pressure to find lasting solutions to restore peace and security in the troubled region.

For now, the loss of life and the frequency of attacks continue to fuel concerns about the long-term stability of the North-East and the future of counterterrorism efforts in Nigeria.
