Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has strongly denied corruption allegations against him, labeling them as unfounded and politically motivated. Speaking at a welcome event held in his honor in Ikeja GRA on Saturday, Obasa addressed claims that he mismanaged funds, including accusations that he spent ₦16 billion on a gate for the Assembly and purchased over 45 Hilux vehicles for lawmakers at an inflated cost of ₦47 billion.
Obasa refuted the allegations, emphasizing the unrealistic nature of these claims. He pointed out that if the supposed ₦47 billion were divided by the 45 vehicles, each one would be valued at ₦1 billion—an amount he deemed impossible. The former Speaker reiterated that these accusations were attempts to tarnish his leadership and integrity.
“I have not done anything wrong,” Obasa declared, highlighting his two decades of service as a lawmaker. “I will debunk all the allegations leveled against me.”
Obasa was removed from his position as Speaker on January 13, 2025, amid allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement. His replacement, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lawal-Meranda, had been his Deputy prior to the removal. However, Obasa clarified that there was no impeachment process involved in his removal and that it was a politically driven attempt to oust him without following proper legislative procedures.
“My tenure as Speaker has been marked by dedication to my duties and respect for my colleagues,” he said, emphasizing that any action to remove him should adhere to the House’s standing rules. “Due process must be followed.”
He further criticized the manner of his removal, noting that it happened while he was out of the country and without the usual parliamentary procedures. “When other Speakers were removed, they were present, and no police were involved. This should be no different,” he added.
Obasa also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to various figures who have supported him throughout his career, including Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Nigeria’s First Lady Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“I believe in the image of our institution, and I will never partake in its destruction,” Obasa affirmed. He urged lawmakers and stakeholders to uphold the integrity of the Lagos State House of Assembly and avoid external interference in its internal matters.
Despite the controversies, Obasa’s supporters remain steadfast in their loyalty, with many in attendance at the event from his home local government areas of Agege, Alimosho, and Kosofe. He vowed to continue working for the development of Lagos State, asserting his innocence and determination to defend his record.
As the situation continues to unfold, Obasa remains a prominent figure in Lagos politics, with ongoing debates about his removal and the future of the state’s legislative leadership.
