The Metropolitan Police Service has dismissed Shola Balogun, a Nigerian-British officer from Bromley, after he was found guilty of biting a fellow officer during a birthday celebration in Bexleyheath, Kent.
The incident, which occurred at a 40th birthday party held at the Goals Sports Bar with around 70 guests, was reviewed in a hearing from October 21-23, led by senior officials, including Christopher McKay. According to hearing documents, Balogun and the victim, colleagues stationed at Bromley Police Station, had a history of lighthearted interactions with no past conflicts.
Reports indicate that tensions arose at around 11:30 p.m. when Balogun, after reportedly consuming alcohol, allegedly grabbed the victim’s glasses and dropped them. When the victim approached Balogun in a friendly manner, Balogun reportedly responded by pushing him in the throat area before biting him on the side of his face. Although Balogun denied these actions, medical records confirmed the injury was consistent with a bite.
The panel, after examining testimonies and character references, found Balogun’s actions to be in violation of the Code of Policing Conduct, stating that his behavior “brought discredit” to the police service. The panel concluded that due to the deliberate nature of the assault, a Final Written Warning was insufficient, resulting in Balogun’s dismissal without notice.
This decision highlights the importance of maintaining high standards in the police service, both on and off duty, to preserve public trust.
