Actor and former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesman Kenneth Okonkwo has condemned President Bola Tinubu for acquiring a new private jet while many Nigerians struggle with economic difficulties.
In a post on Instagram, Okonkwo expressed his disapproval of Tinubu’s decision, highlighting the severe challenges faced by the Nigerian populace, including hunger, fuel shortages, and financial instability. “People are dying of hunger. No food, no fuel, no finance, no electricity, and President Tinubu is buying a presidential jet. This is the height of insensitivity,” Okonkwo wrote.
The criticism follows the official introduction of the new aircraft, which replaces a 19-year-old Boeing B737-700 (BBJ) that had been in use since President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration. Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, noted that the new jet was acquired at a lower cost and was necessary due to safety and cost-effectiveness issues raised by a House of Representatives committee.
Okonkwo’s comments reflect growing discontent over the government’s spending priorities amidst ongoing economic struggles in Nigeria.
