The Federal Government has announced that it will withhold compensation payments to affected property owners along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project due to alterations in the initial plan. Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, made this known during an inspection of ongoing work on the project.
The government has reduced the entire corridor from Phase Two, Section Two of the coastal route to effective pavements of 55km, including 10 train tracks. This change has affected the compensation payments, which will only resume after a review of the affected properties along the highway.
So far, the government has released approximately N10 billion in compensations. The rerouting of the project will lead to the safety of many underground cables and save properties, as the construction is now realigned to mostly swampy areas.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, which spans 700 kilometers and extends through nine states, aims to benefit over 30 million Nigerians. The government had set up a committee to review, assess, and compensate landowners affected by the construction of the highway.
