President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged state governors to prioritize agriculture and invest in food crops to address the high cost of foodstuff in the country. He also encouraged Nigerians to engage in subsistence farming to complement government efforts.
Tinubu made this call while receiving an award at the Global Integrity International Award on Good Governance and Economy, organized by the Nigerian Human Rights Community (NHRC). He emphasized the need for collective effort to drive down the high cost of foodstuff, citing examples of videos showing pepper being sold at exorbitant prices.
The President assured that his administration was committed to improving the economy and governance processes, and had recorded notable achievements in power generation, Foreign Direct Investment, infrastructure development, and security.
He also highlighted initiatives aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity, including dry season farming and support for wheat farmers, which have created jobs and injected billions into the economy.
Tinubu acknowledged the current challenges faced by Nigerians but promised that the pains would soon give way to the benefits of his administration’s efforts, citing gradual growth recorded in the first quarter of this year.
The event also saw the awarding of excellence awards to notable individuals, including Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka and Pa Ayo Opadokun, for their contributions to democratic struggle and good governance.
