A member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Obi Aguocha (LP-Abia), has visited former President Muhammadu Buhari to request his intervention in securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu has been in detention since 2021 and is facing trial for alleged treason and terrorism charges.
Aguocha, who represents the Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia, expressed regret for the actions and utterances of Kanu in the past and sought a political resolution to the issue. He believes that a political solution would promote greater understanding and unity in the country.
Buhari commended Aguocha’s humility and dedication to serving his people and assured him that he would not be opposed to a political solution for Kanu’s release. The meeting was part of a broader initiative by Aguocha to secure Kanu’s release through political dialogue and engagement.
Aguocha had earlier led a group of 50 House members to sign a letter appealing to President Bola Tinubu to release Kanu. The letter requested Tinubu to direct the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to invoke section 174(1)(c) of the 1999 constitution to reach a desired outcome.
Kanu’s release would be a significant step towards resolving the issues surrounding his detention and trial, and could lead to greater understanding and unity in the country.
