The Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is currently holding its 63rd Ordinary Summit in Abuja, Nigeria. The meeting, which started at 1 pm, is being held at the State House Conference Centre.
President Bola Tinubu, who is the current Chairman of ECOWAS, addressed the meeting and thanked his fellow West African leaders for their support during his tenure. His tenure as Chairman is set to expire on July 9.
The summit also welcomed the President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who is attending for the first time since his inauguration in April.
During the meeting, a new leader is expected to be elected to take over the affairs of the bloc for the next year.
President Tinubu also used the opportunity to demand financial commitment from member states to fight terrorism in the region.
The meeting is expected to discuss other pressing issues affecting the region, including the implementation of the ECOWAS single currency and the political situation in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
The outcome of the meeting will be made public later.
This summit is a significant event in the region, as it brings together leaders from 15 West African countries to discuss and address common challenges and opportunities.
ECOWAS is a regional economic community established in 1975 to promote economic integration and cooperation among its member states.
The organization has been instrumental in promoting peace, stability, and economic development in the region.
The summit is being held at a time when the region is facing several challenges, including terrorism, political instability, and economic difficulties.
However, with the collective efforts of the ECOWAS leaders, the region is expected to overcome these challenges and achieve its goals of economic integration and development.
