President Tinubu Heads to Ghana for Key African Union Meeting

Abuja, July 19, 2024 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to leave Abuja for Accra, Ghana on Saturday, July 20. He will be attending the Sixth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union (AU), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Regional Mechanisms (RMs), and African Union Member States.

In a statement released by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, it was confirmed that President Tinubu will address the meeting as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. His address will cover regional integration across various sectors in Africa, particularly focusing on the progress and challenges faced in West Africa since the last meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya in July 2023.

President Tinubu is expected to present the ‘2024 Report on the State of the Community’, which will emphasize key areas such as peace, regional security, governance, economic integration, humanitarian and social development, energy, mines, and agriculture. This year’s meeting is organized under the AU’s theme for 2024: ‘Educate and Skill Africa for the 21st Century.’

The Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, established in 2017, is the main platform for the AU and RECs to synchronize their activities and advance the continental integration agenda. President Tinubu, who assumed the role of ECOWAS Chairman in July 2023, gave his inaugural speech at the Fifth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting in Nairobi, where he highlighted Africa’s strengths and the importance of unity.

The Accra meeting’s agenda includes assessing the AU’s early warning and conflict prevention systems and enhancing collaboration among regional economic communities to speed up integration efforts. A declaration is expected to be adopted at the conclusion of the meeting.
