October 1, 2024 – Abuja, Nigeria
The Nigerian police have clashed with protesters in Abuja this morning, using teargas and live ammunition against demonstrators participating in the #FearlessInOctober protest. The demonstration, organized to highlight the increasing hardships faced by Nigerians under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, attracted thousands of participants who gathered in areas such as Jabi and Utako.
Protesters chanted slogans like “We are hungry” as they marched through the streets, carrying banners with messages such as “Bad Governance has ended the dreams of Nigerian youths, end it now” and “Enough is Enough – Revolution Now.” Videos shared on social media showed the chaotic scene as protesters fled from the tear gas and gunfire.
The protest was led by human rights activist Comrade Omoyele Sowore, who called for action against the rising poverty, unemployment, and insecurity in the country. In a social media post prior to the event, Sowore encouraged Nigerians to voice their frustrations and stand up against government policies that they deem harmful.
“Our protests are our right and a necessary response to the government’s failures,” Sowore stated, emphasizing that he has spent significant time imprisoned under previous governments due to his activism.
As the situation escalated, many in the crowd expressed their frustration at the rising cost of living, particularly the skyrocketing price of fuel. One protester remarked, “We are buying fuel for ₦1000 and you expect us not to come out and protest. What are we saying? We are hungry.”
The police response to the protests has drawn criticism, with many questioning the use of force against citizens expressing their grievances. This incident marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle with governance and public discontent, as citizens demand accountability and better living conditions.
