October 26, 2024 – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded Nigeria three points and three goals after an African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya was abandoned due to poor treatment by the Libyan host. The decision also fines the Libya Football Federation $50,000, to be paid within 60 days, following a ruling by CAF’s Disciplinary Board Chairperson, Ousmane Kanethe.
The incident occurred when Nigeria’s Super Eagles players and staff were left stranded for hours at an abandoned airport in Libya, leading to Nigeria’s decision not to play. CAF’s ruling underlined Libya’s breach of Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code, emphasizing the importance of discipline and fair play in the tournament.
The five-point ruling stated that:
1. Libya’s Football Federation breached the tournament regulations.
2. The October 15 match in Benghazi was declared a 3-0 forfeit in Nigeria’s favor.
3. Libya is ordered to pay a $50,000 fine within 60 days.
4. Further motions for relief were dismissed.
This decision brings Nigeria’s points to 10 from four matches, boosting their position in the AFCON qualifiers as they aim for tournament qualification.
CAF’s firm stance on the matter reinforces its commitment to fairness and player welfare across African football.
