The federal government of Nigeria has launched the Export Skills Acquisition Centre (ESAC) and Fashion Innovative Hub for Women and Youths in Apapa, Lagos State. This initiative is seen as a significant step towards Nigeria’s economic growth, empowerment, and sustainable development.
The launch took place last week and aims to address the challenges that have hindered Nigeria’s export growth and economic diversification. Mrs. Nonye Ayeni, the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), emphasized the importance of this centre during her welcome address. She noted that the establishment of the ESAC is a result of a Memorandum of Understanding between the NEPC and LeLook Bags Academy, which will provide hands-on training in bag-making and other accessories for women, youth, and people living with disabilities.
“This collaborative effort will enhance the quality and standards of products that will be exported to the global market,” Ayeni said. She assured the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment that the NEPC is committed to its “Double Your Exports” campaign, which aims to train youths and facilitate the export of products from the LeLook factory.
Ayeni highlighted that the ESAC would not only boost non-oil exports but also create jobs and inspire Nigerians, especially women and youth, to adopt an export culture. She stated, “The key to unlocking Nigeria’s potential lies in equipping our citizens with the skills and knowledge needed to compete globally.”
The federal government reiterated its commitment to developing the skills of citizens to enhance their participation in the export sector. “This centre responds to the need for training that empowers youth, entrepreneurs, and small business owners,” said a government representative. The ESAC will offer specialized training programs covering various export-related skills, including product development, quality control, international trade regulations, logistics, marketing, and digital skills.
These programs are designed to equip participants with practical skills that meet international standards, thereby increasing the competitiveness of Nigerian products in the global market. The initiative aims to foster a new generation of knowledgeable and innovative exporters who can meet international trade demands.
Mrs. Chinwe Ezenwa, the Managing Director/CEO of LeLook Nigeria Limited, expressed her joy at the launch of the ESAC. She highlighted the need for equipment that would enable persons with disabilities to benefit from the centre, emphasizing that no one should be left behind in this initiative.
The federal government views this launch as a vital step towards diversifying Nigeria’s economy and reducing reliance on a single sector. By addressing the skills gap in the export sector, the ESAC is expected to play a crucial role in generating foreign exchange, creating jobs, and reducing poverty across the nation.
