October 29, 2024— Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives representing Aba North and Aba South in Abia State, has publicly apologized after a video surfaced showing an altercation with a Bolt driver at his residence in Maitama, Abuja. The driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, recorded the incident on Sunday, and the footage quickly spread online, drawing significant public attention and criticism.
In his apology, Hon. Ikwechegh acknowledged his actions were inappropriate for a public figure. “As a public servant, I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people,” he said. “My behavior fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry.”
The legislator expressed regret for the distress and embarrassment the incident caused Abuwatseya, his constituents, and the wider public. He assured the public that he is cooperating fully with the Nigerian Police, who are investigating the matter.
“I want to assure the public that I am fully cooperating with the Nigerian Police investigation into this matter,” he said in his statement, supporting their efforts to ensure accountability. Hon. Ikwechegh added that he appreciated the prompt response from both his political party and law enforcement, reinforcing a commitment to uphold the law and protect citizens’ rights.
To address the incident, Ikwechegh said he plans to seek professional counseling and will engage in community service focused on promoting respect and empathy. “I am taking immediate steps, including counseling, to ensure that such behavior never happens again. I’ll also participate in community initiatives to help foster respect and understanding,” he said.
Finally, he encouraged all Nigerians to promote a culture of respect and tolerance. “We must work together to build a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect,” he added, hoping that this apology would serve as a step towards personal growth and public trust restoration.
