Stampede at Rice Sharing Event in Anambra Claims Lives

Anambra, Nigeria— A tragic stampede during a rice distribution event in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, has led to multiple fatalities and injuries. The incident occurred on the morning of Saturday, December 21, 2024, as large crowds gathered to receive palliatives provided by a local philanthropist.

Witnesses at the scene reported chaotic scenes as a surge of people scrambled for their share of the rice. According to a video obtained by SaharaReporters, over 100 people, including women and pregnant women, were reportedly killed in the stampede. The victims were transported to Our Lady’s Hospital in Okija, where witnesses documented the grim aftermath.

A male voice in the video described the situation in Igbo, stating, “This is what happened in Okija. People who went to share rice were stampeded to death. The dead bodies are still being brought in, including those of pregnant women. It is a tragedy.”

Local residents confirmed the incident, though the exact number of casualties remains uncertain. “Preliminary calls from home have confirmed the tragedy,” said a resident from Okija.

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the stampede. In a statement, Ikenga explained that the event, organized annually by a philanthropist, was overwhelmed by an uncontrolled crowd before it officially began.

“Anambra State Police Operatives have taken over the scene in Okija where an alleged stampede occurred early today,” Ikenga said. “Preliminary investigations indicate that a large number of people took over the venue, resulting in the unfortunate incident. While details remain sketchy, investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided.”

The stampede has left the community in mourning, raising concerns about the planning and security of such large-scale distribution events. Efforts are ongoing to determine the exact number of victims and to provide assistance to the injured.
