China Imposes Counter Tariffs on U.S. Amid Rising Trade Tensions

China’s Ministry of Commerce announced on Tuesday that it is imposing counter tariffs on multiple U.S. products in response to the latest American tariff increases. The Chinese government also revealed it has launched an investigation into Google over suspected antitrust violations.

The new Chinese tariffs include:

– 15% tariff on coal and liquefied natural gas

– 10% tariff on crude oil, agricultural machinery, and large-displacement cars

In a statement, China’s Ministry of Commerce condemned the U.S.’s unilateral tariff hikes, calling them a violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

“The U.S.’s unilateral tariff increase seriously violates WTO regulations,” the statement read. “It is not only unhelpful in solving its own problems but also damages normal economic and trade cooperation between China and the U.S.”

The tariffs come as the 10% tariff ordered by President Donald Trump on Chinese imports is set to take effect on Tuesday. Despite the tensions, Trump is expected to hold discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the coming days.

Alongside the tariff announcement, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation confirmed it has launched an antitrust investigation into Google. Although the government did not explicitly link the investigation to trade disputes, the timing suggests it could be a strategic response to U.S. trade measures.

The latest tariffs mark a further escalation in trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies. The ongoing trade conflict has already impacted global markets, supply chains, and diplomatic relations.

As both countries prepare for further negotiations, the international business community is closely watching for any signs of compromise or continued economic retaliation.
