Controversial Nigerian TikToker Olumide Ogunsanwo, popularly known as Sea King, has reportedly been re-arrested by the police following allegations of cyberbullying against Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
Social media commentator VeryDarkMan (VDM) reacted to the arrest in a viral video, condemning the use of police power to suppress freedom of speech. However, he also criticized Sea King for his disrespectful remarks about Pastor Adeboye.
VDM, a well-known social media activist, expressed disapproval of Sea King’s choice of words while addressing the clergyman. In a widely shared video, he replayed a clip where Sea King allegedly referred to Pastor Adeboye as a “useless boy.”
“Calling him a useless boy—someone of that age—is crazy,” VDM remarked. “I don’t care about activism, but this level of disrespect is unacceptable.”
Despite advocating against the use of police force for defamation cases, VDM emphasized that public figures, especially elders, should be addressed with a level of decorum.
Following reports of Sea King’s re-arrest, Pastor Adeboye became a trending topic on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Many users debated whether cyberbullying laws were being applied selectively.
According to Sahara Reporters, Sea King was allegedly arrested after a petition was submitted by Paul James Adama, who represented a Christian association acting on behalf of Adeboye.
The controversy sparked mixed reactions online. Some supported VDM’s stance, agreeing that Sea King’s comments were inappropriate, while others argued that his arrest was an abuse of power.
A few social media users criticized VDM for his seemingly inconsistent stance on activism. One user wrote:
“Guy, today you’re against pastors and police, tomorrow you’re supporting them. Make we know where you stand abeg.”
Another user questioned the timing of the video, suggesting that the clip of Sea King with dreadlocks was old footage.
This incident has reignited conversations about cyberbullying laws in Nigeria and whether social media users should face legal consequences for defamatory statements. Critics argue that such laws are often used to suppress dissenting voices rather than protect public figures.
As the case unfolds, many Nigerians will be watching to see how the legal system handles the situation and whether this sets a precedent for future online defamation cases.
