Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called on residents of Osun State to ensure a peaceful and orderly local government election today. In a statement released on Saturday morning, Atiku emphasized the importance of local council elections, describing them as the “heartbeat of a democratic system” that directly impacts the daily lives of citizens.
Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election, commended Governor Ademola Adeleke for proceeding with the elections despite challenges. He also urged security agencies and polling officials to carry out their duties with fairness and professionalism.
“As residents in Osun State go out to the polls today to elect their local leaders, I urge all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free process,” Atiku stated. “Local government elections are vital to democracy, as they shape governance at the grassroots level.”
Atiku’s remarks come amid rising tensions in Osun State, where recent incidents of violence have led to casualties. The former Vice-President accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of instigating unrest in a bid to influence the election outcome, warning that such tactics threaten Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has advised the Osun State government to suspend the elections due to security threats. Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that intelligence reports indicate a high likelihood of violence if the elections proceed as planned.
“Various groups, including political factions and other interested parties, are mobilizing to disrupt the peace,” Adejobi noted. “Given the security concerns and ongoing legal disputes, the Nigeria Police Force strongly advises the Osun State Government to reconsider the timing of the elections.”
Despite the police warning, electoral activities are underway across the state, with heightened security presence at polling units. Atiku’s call for peace and responsible conduct by security agencies is seen as crucial in ensuring a credible and transparent electoral process.
The outcome of the Osun local government elections is expected to shape the state’s political landscape in the coming months. Observers and civil society organizations continue to monitor developments closely to assess the credibility of the electoral process.
