The recent attack at the Kogi-Enugu boundary, where five members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) were killed and three others remain missing, has once again highlighted the growing security challenges in Nigeria’s border communities.
While authorities have arrested two suspects and are actively searching for others, the incident raises broader concerns about rising ethnic tensions, land disputes, and security failures in rural areas. The attack, which occurred at the Eshi River border point between Opanda in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area (LGA), Enugu State, and Amaeke in Igalamela-Odolu LGA, Kogi State, is one of many violent confrontations in recent years.
Why Is This Happening?
The increase in attacks against herders, farmers, and local communities stems from multiple factors, including:
1. Competition Over Land and Resources
The rising demand for land due to population growth and agricultural expansion has led to frequent clashes between herders and farmers. Herders move cattle in search of grazing land, while farmers seek to protect their crops, leading to confrontations.
2. Ethnic and Political Divisions
In many regions, conflicts between farming communities and herders are fueled by ethnic tensions and political influence. Misinformation and political manipulation often worsen the situation, leading to violent outbreaks.
3. Weak Security Presence
Many border and rural areas lack adequate security, making them hotspots for violent attacks. Limited police and military presence allow armed groups and criminals to operate with little resistance.
4. Retaliation and Cycles of Violence
Attacks against herders often trigger retaliatory actions, creating a cycle of violence. In some cases, armed groups take advantage of existing conflicts to escalate tensions for their own gains.
Call for Urgent Action
MACBAN’s National Deputy Director General, Gidado Siddiki, has urged the government to investigate the killings and ensure that justice is served. He emphasized that MACBAN members are law-abiding citizens contributing to economic growth and should be protected.
The Enugu State Police Command has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and measures are being put in place to prevent future attacks. Security experts, however, warn that unless long-term solutions such as land reforms, improved community relations, and enhanced security patrols are implemented, similar incidents may continue to occur.
As Nigeria faces increasing security concerns, the need for proactive measures, dialogue between communities, and government intervention becomes more urgent to prevent further loss of lives and ensure peace in volatile regions.
