Gunmen have attacked the Awgu Divisional Police Headquarters in Enugu State, killing a police constable identified as Akpa Emmanuel. The attackers also vandalized the station and stole weapons, including an AK-47 rifle and two riot guns.
According to sources, the attack happened in the early hours of Monday, March 24, 2025. The incident has caused panic in Awgu town, leading to a heavy security presence as law enforcement officers work to restore order.
In response to the attack, the new Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has deployed additional security forces, including the Deputy Commissioner of Operations, Special Forces, the Police Mobile Force (PMF), and the Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU).
Second Attack on Police Division
In a separate incident, gunmen also targeted the Inyi Divisional Police Headquarters in Oji-River Local Government Area around 2:00 a.m. on the same day. However, security personnel successfully repelled the attackers, and no casualties or damage were reported.
Both attacks have raised concerns over the increasing insecurity in the region, especially as the Awgu attack occurred just weeks after a new Divisional Police Officer was posted to the station.
Efforts to obtain a statement from the Enugu State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, did not respond to calls or text messages.
Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces as investigations continue.
