Amid rising security concerns in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, and its surrounding areas, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, has deployed a Special Intervention Squad (SIS) to restore order. The move comes as residents express growing fears over kidnappings, armed robberies, and violent attacks.
Increased Police Presence in Owerri
The deployment of over 60 specially trained officers has intensified police activities across Owerri. Key locations, including major roads, markets, and residential areas, now have a visible security presence. This strategic move aims to dismantle criminal networks operating in the city and beyond.
According to a statement by the spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, DSP Henry Okoye, the squad will work closely with local law enforcement and vigilante groups.
“This deployment is a direct response to the security challenges affecting Owerri and other parts of the state. The Special Intervention Squad will focus on reducing crime, ensuring public safety, and restoring confidence among residents,” Okoye said.
While many residents welcome the increased security measures, others remain skeptical about their long-term effectiveness. Some business owners in areas like Douglas Road and Egbu Road expressed relief, saying they feel safer with the presence of more officers.
However, others worry about possible harassment by security personnel. “We appreciate the efforts to improve security, but we hope the police will remain professional and not harass innocent people,” said Chinedu Eze, a shop owner in Owerri.
Governor and Police Commissioner Pledge Support
The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Aboki Danjuma, assured residents that the officers would operate with professionalism and efficiency. He also acknowledged the support of Governor Hope Uzodimma in ensuring the success of the deployment.
“The governor’s commitment to security, especially in providing welfare and logistics for the officers, has strengthened our operations. We are determined to make Owerri and the entire state safer for everyone,” Danjuma stated.
Authorities urge residents to report suspicious activities and cooperate with law enforcement as the Special Intervention Squad begins operations in the city. The coming weeks will determine how effective the deployment is in curbing crime in Owerri and surrounding areas.
