UNIZIK to Honour Seyi Tinubu as 8,157 Graduate at 19th Convocation

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has announced plans to graduate a total of 8,157 students during its 19th convocation ceremony, scheduled to begin on Wednesday, March 25, 2025.

Speaking at a press briefing at the university’s conference hall, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, stated that the convocation will feature a lecture delivered by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

Professor Ikechebelu revealed that the university will also confer honorary degrees on three prominent Nigerians in recognition of their contributions to society and support for the institution. Those to be honoured are Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Dr. Ali Pate; President Bola Tinubu’s son, Mr. Oluwaseyi (Seyi) Tinubu; and industrialist Chief Chika Emenike.

“We give glory to God for the opportunity to celebrate another successful academic year. A total of 8,157 students will be awarded degrees in various fields during the convocation,” Ikechebelu said.

Highlighting the university’s journey, he noted that UNIZIK began as a state university before becoming a federal institution. “Despite the challenges faced last year, we now enjoy greater stability, thanks to the support of President Bola Tinubu,” he added.

The acting VC also outlined the university’s commitment to academic, infrastructural, and administrative excellence, stressing the importance of creating an environment that promotes productivity for staff and students.

He assured the public that security measures have been fully put in place to ensure a smooth and safe convocation event.

On infrastructure, Ikechebelu said several ongoing projects are progressing well, despite challenges such as vandalism and rising utility costs. He disclosed that the institution pays between N80 million and N100 million monthly for electricity due to its Band A status. However, through strategic partnerships, the university has been able to manage these costs effectively.

Speaking on the honourees, he said, “These individuals have proven records of impact. Their recognition is a testament to their dedication to national development and support for education.”

He also noted that digitalisation has improved operations across the campus and expressed optimism for even greater achievements in the coming years.
