The Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate alleged fraudulent activities involving the Lagos State House of Assembly. At the center of the controversy is the construction of a gate, reportedly costing an astronomical N17 billion.
According to the petition, the project cost is grossly inflated, with evaluations suggesting it should not exceed N15 million.
The petition accuses Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, and the Clerk, Mr. Onafeko Olalekan Biliamin, of mismanaging Constituency Intervention and Project Funds.
It also implicates Hon. Nurain Akinsanya, representing Mushin Constituency 1, in the alleged fraudulent construction of the Ikeja Local Government secretariat. The group claims the project was forcibly taken over from the Local Government Chairman under Akinsanya’s supervision.
The petition raises concerns about Hon. Obasa’s purported personal relationship with EFCC Chairman Ola Olukayode. The group alleges that Obasa influenced Olukayode’s confirmation and maintains close ties with him, which they fear may compromise the investigation. However, they expressed confidence in the EFCC’s ability to act impartially.
The coalition called on the EFCC to:
1. Investigate the allocation and expenditure of N17 billion for the gate project.
2. Examine the management of Constituency Intervention and Project Funds by Lagos lawmakers.
3. Take decisive action to ensure transparency and accountability.
The alleged misuse of public funds has sparked outrage among citizens, who demand clarity on how resources meant for public projects are being utilized.
The petition underscores the need for EFCC to uphold its mandate and restore public trust in governance.
More updates will follow as the EFCC responds to the petition.
