June 3, 2025 | Abuja, Nigeria — Retired General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, former Chief of Army Staff, has sharply criticized the current economic conditions in Nigeria, calling the poverty and hardship under President Bola Tinubu’s administration “unbearable, radical, massive, and sudden.”
Speaking at the birthday celebration of former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi on Sunday, Buratai expressed deep concern about the sharp deterioration in Nigerians’ living conditions over the last two years.
He explained that although poverty had been rising gradually over the years, the worsening under Tinubu’s leadership was unprecedented and abrupt.
“For too long, we’ve been suffering gradually—suffering and smiling. But this time, the hardship is more visible, more direct,” Buratai said. “It tells us that we must fix things because we cannot continue like this.”
Buratai highlighted the government’s perceived insensitivity to the impact of its policies on ordinary Nigerians and called for urgent measures to address poverty and insecurity.
He remains hopeful that the second half of Tinubu’s administration will deliver real change to the country.
