The administration of President Bola Tinubu has expressed strong condemnation of the recent Israeli military actions in Gaza. The Nigerian government particularly decried the bombing of Al Shifa Hospital in early April, repeated bombings of schools, the March 2024 attack on Firas Market, and the Nuseirat Refugee Camp Market, as well as drone strikes on World Central Kitchen aid staff in April.
Nigeria described the attacks on Rafah as a severe affront to humanity. In a statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Nigeria voiced deep concern for the safety and welfare of Gaza’s civilian population and emphasized the need to protect human dignity and life in the region.
The Nigerian government criticized the ongoing disregard for ceasefire agreements and the violation of humanitarian corridors, calling the situation a mature humanitarian catastrophe. The statement underscored Nigeria’s dismay at the deliberate obstruction of aid and relief efforts.
“Nigeria strongly believes that the fundamental human rights, particularly the right to life of Gaza’s vulnerable civilian population, must be preserved at all costs,” the statement read. Nigeria called on all parties involved, including Israel, Palestine, the United Nations, the European Union, human rights groups, civil society organizations, world leaders, and the international community, to intensify efforts for a swift resolution to the conflict and to stop the ongoing violence against defenseless people in Gaza and beyond.
The Nigerian government reaffirmed its support for the two-state solution as essential for resolving the conflict and stated that it is considering intervention to aid the people of Gaza, viewing it as a crucial step in preserving human values and dignity.
