President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to target those responsible for the killing of five soldiers in Aba, Abia State, and those advocating for sit-at-home protests in the Southeast. This directive came after a tragic incident on Thursday, May 30, when five soldiers were murdered in Aba, allegedly by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a statement signed on Saturday night, President Tinubu expressed his outrage over the killings and emphasized that no one should feel empowered to attack state agents. “On no account should anyone, under any guise, have the audacity to kill agents of state,” he stated.
The President condemned the violent acts, stating, “These unwarranted barbaric and evil acts stand condemned and should never be condoned and tolerated in our country.” He noted that the federal government would take strong action against those who habitually attack armed forces personnel. This incident in Aba follows a similar attack two months ago in Okuama, Delta State, highlighting an ongoing threat to peacekeepers.
“Our soldiers and the police have the onerous duty to protect all of us from aggressors and non-state actors. Hundreds of them have paid the ultimate price in fulfillment of their duty, while some have experienced the indignity of being manhandled by the people they protect,” Tinubu remarked. He stressed that security forces do not deserve such mindless attacks by unruly elements in society.
President Tinubu urged security agencies not only to capture those responsible for the Aba attack but also to target those advocating for the sit-at-home protests. He labeled these actions as treasonous and warned that the government’s restraint should not be mistaken for weakness. “We are working to build a peaceful and harmonious society, but nobody should be under any illusion that the government will not act appropriately when the lives of our officers and men are wantonly taken,” he said.
The President also extended his condolences to the families of the slain soldiers, their colleagues, and the leadership of the armed forces. He encouraged other peacekeeping personnel not to be discouraged by the unfortunate incident in Aba.
