Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has proposed a political solution to resolve the ongoing detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Atiku, who was the presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general election, believes that releasing Kanu could help reduce security challenges in the Southeast region.
Atiku made these remarks in a statement on Friday, in which he condemned the recent killing of soldiers in Aba, Abia State. On Thursday, at least four soldiers were killed by gunmen at a military checkpoint in Obikabia Junction, Aba. The attackers, reportedly enforcing a sit-at-home order declared by IPOB to mark Biafra Day, targeted the soldiers at about 8:00 a.m.
Expressing his condolences, Atiku said, “The violence that led to the killing of soldiers and civilians in Abia State on Thursday stands condemned. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those who may have lost a loved one. May their souls rest in peace.”
He further highlighted the broader impact of the violence, particularly on students writing their WAEC examinations, who were affected by the sit-at-home order. Atiku emphasized the need to distinguish between criminal elements and legitimate agitators. “The veil of the so-called Unknown Gun Men hiding undercover to unleash death and mayhem must be lifted to ensure that criminal elements are separated from legitimate agitators,” he said.
Calling for a political resolution, Atiku stated, “To this end, without prejudice to the ongoing legal processes, I think the time has come to explore a political resolution to the Nnamdi Kanu and other associated issues. I believe that this will diffuse the compressor cooker situation in the region. It will be a win-win for all parties.”
Atiku’s suggestion comes amid increasing tension in the Southeast, where the enforcement of sit-at-home orders and other acts of violence have significantly disrupted daily life. By advocating for a political approach, Atiku aims to address the root causes of the unrest and foster peace and stability in the region.
He also urged relevant security agencies to track and prosecute those responsible for the attacks. “The perpetrators of such violent acts must be brought to justice to ensure the safety and security of our nation,” he added.
