The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has accused organized labour of committing treason by shutting down the national grid during the recent nationwide strike. Akume made this statement in Abuja at a meeting with the National Executive Council of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
According to Akume, tampering with the national grid is an act of economic sabotage and treasonable felony. He emphasized that the government is working to rebuild the economy and urged labour to support this effort.
Akume also announced that the government will soon make Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, rice, and other essentials available to Nigerians to ease economic hardship. He encouraged the church to partner with the government in providing infrastructure for citizens.
Meanwhile, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has proposed a new minimum wage of N90,000 for Nigerian workers, while President Bola Tinubu has given the Minister of Finance a 48-hour ultimatum to provide the cost implications of the new minimum wage.
The labour movement has been demanding an increase in the minimum wage to address the country’s economic challenges. The government has implemented an N35,000 wage, which is higher than the minimum wage, and promises to do more to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.
