Late Onyeka Onwenu Shared Her Burial Wishes Three Years Ago

The Nigerian entertainment industry was thrown into mourning on Tuesday night with the passing of veteran singer and actress Onyeka Onwenu at Reddington Hospital in Lagos. What many may not know is that Onwenu had shared her wishes for how she wanted to be remembered and buried three years ago.

In an opinion piece published in Premium Times in 2021, Onwenu articulated her desire for a modest and private farewell. She wrote, “Do it quickly, quietly, and privately,” emphasizing that her burial should be free from unnecessary fanfare. She requested that her loved ones “mourn, yes, but not excessively,” and instead focus on celebrating her life with “prayers and lighthearted moments.”

Onwenu’s wishes reflect her down-to-earth personality and dislike for unnecessary attention. She wanted to be celebrated while she was alive, not after her passing. In her words, “Celebrate me with prayers, lunch, or dinner afterwards. Share some jokes about me and laugh. Make merriment, and then go about your business.”

Onwenu’s illustrious career spanned music, film, advocacy, journalism, and politics. She was a powerful voice for social justice and women’s empowerment. Her music, which included hits like “One Love” and “You and I,” continues to inspire generations. Onwenu also authored the autobiography “My Father’s Daughter” and held various roles, including chairing the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and judging on the X Factor series.

Onwenu’s passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes from fans, colleagues, and admirers. Her legacy will continue to inspire and influence future generations. As we mourn her passing, we must also respect her wishes for a modest and private farewell.

As we say goodbye to this iconic figure, we must honor her wishes and celebrate her life in the way she wanted. We must share stories, laughter, and prayers, and then go about our business, inspired by her legacy to make a positive impact on the world.
