No fewer than four mobile policemen were killed early today by unidentified gunmen who opened fire on them at Oraifite community, in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The attack which occurred in the wee-hours of Thursday, has heightened anxiety among security personnel on election duty and residents of the state.

It was further gathered that the hoodlums also made away with the dead officers’ weapons.

Oraifite is about 46Kms to the capital Awka.

Efforts to confirm the exact number of casualties in the attack failed.

When contacted on phone, the Zone 13 Public Relations Officer, DSP Nkeiruka Nwude, who is in charge of election matter, referred our correspondent to the Force PRO, CP Frank Mba.

However, Mba’s phone was switched off when contacted for confirmation on the attack.

A gory picture sighted by our correspondent in Awka, the State capital, however indicated that no fewer than four policemen were gunned down in the attack.

A source close to the area who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that both the dead and injured were taken to a nearby hospital in the area.
