The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced a temporary suspension on the issuance of communication licences across three categories. The decision, as outlined in a statement signed by Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs at NCC, is in accordance with the powers vested in the commission under the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) of 2003.
The suspension affects the issuance of licences in three key categories: Interconnect Exchange Licence, Mobile Virtual Network Operator Licence, and Value Added Service Aggregator Licence. According to the statement, this move is aimed at promoting fair competition, developing the communications industry, and conducting a comprehensive review of various aspects within these categories.
During the suspension period, which commenced on May 17, 2024, the NCC will not accept new applications for the aforementioned licences. However, pending applications will still be considered based on their individual merits. The commission invites the public to direct any enquiries or seek clarifications regarding this suspension notice to licensing@ncc.gov.ng.
This temporary measure underscores the NCC’s commitment to ensuring a level playing field within the communications sector and to adapting to the evolving dynamics of the market.
