The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on President Bola Tinubu to resolve the lingering minimum wage issue and the pending crisis with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The union made this call in a 17-paragraph communique issued at the end of its quarterly meeting in Ibadan.
According to the NUJ President, Chief (Dr) Chris Iziguso, the Federal Government’s approved minimum wage of N62,000 is not realistic considering the current economic situation in the country. He emphasized that the Joint Labour is demanding a living wage that will enable workers to live a meaningful life.
The union also urged the government to address the pending issues with ASUU, noting that another indefinite strike would have a devastating effect on students. Additionally, the NUJ warned security agents and politicians against further attacks on its members nationwide, stressing the need for adequate protection of journalists, especially as the country prepares for governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states.
The communique also expressed concerns about the lingering insecurity across the nation, the increasing cost of living, and the delay in the production at the Dangote Refinery, which has exacerbated the economic hardship in the country.
