Senate Moves to Strengthen NIMC’s Regulatory Roles, Harmonise ID Systems

The Senate has passed a bill for a second reading that aims to strengthen the regulatory duties of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and enhance Nigeria’s identity system. The bill, sponsored by Senator Barau Jibrin, seeks to broaden the eligibility criteria for registration to ensure inclusivity and universal coverage.

The bill aims to:

– Streamline the sharing of personal data with robust data protection measures

– Enhance the administrative enforcement powers of NIMC

– Remove criminalisation for non-use of NIN

– Harmonise all existing identity systems across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs)

The bill will achieve several objectives, including fostering inclusion, universal coverage, accessibility, and unlocking significant financial and security benefits for the nation. Senators passed it for second reading in a majority voice vote.

This development is a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria’s identity management system and promoting interoperability across different sectors.
