In a recent plenary session held on Tuesday in Jos, the Plateau House of Assembly speaker, Gabriel Dewan, inaugurated Daniel Nanlong as a member of the 10th assembly, representing the Mikang constituency. Nanlong, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and served as the majority leader in the ninth assembly, joins the legislative body following his successful election and subsequent legal affirmation.
During the plenary, Speaker Dewan conducted the swearing-in ceremony, marking a significant moment for Nanlong and his constituents. This inauguration follows a previous session on April 5, where nine out of the sixteen members who won their cases at the Appeal Court were sworn in. Nanlong is among the seven remaining members-elect who had not yet been inaugurated until now.
Expressing his gratitude, Nanlong spoke to journalists about his commitment to serving the people of his constituency and the state. “I am thankful for the opportunity to represent my people in the 10th assembly. I will use my experience for the betterment of the legislative arm and work collaboratively with my colleagues for the good of our state,” he said. Nanlong emphasized his intent to support the assembly’s leadership and the executive arm to attract investors to Plateau State.
In addition to the inauguration, the assembly extended the tenure of Plateau’s acting auditor-general, Christy Davou, for another six months. Speaker Dewan explained that this extension, requested by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, would provide sufficient time to appoint a substantive auditor-general.
The plenary also saw the progression of a bill aimed at establishing the office of the attorney general in Plateau State. The bill, sponsored by Joseph Bukar (APC/Shendam), passed its second reading. Once enacted, this bill will create an organization to coordinate the activities of the Ministry of Justice, enhancing its operational efficiency.
Further directives from the National Assembly led to the creation of three new standing committees within the Plateau House of Assembly. Speaker Dewan announced the establishment of the Committee on Food Security and Nutrition, the Committee on Traditional Matters, and the Standing Committee on Election Matters. He noted that the Committee on Food Security and Nutrition would be inaugurated in the next plenary session, while the other two committees would undergo further assessment and deliberation.
The inauguration of Nanlong and the legislative developments during the plenary session highlight the ongoing efforts of the Plateau House of Assembly to address key issues and enhance governance in the state. With the new member on board and strategic committees in place, the assembly is poised to tackle challenges and drive progress for the people of Plateau State.
