Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have detained Micheal Lenin, a prominent leader of the ongoing hunger protests in Abuja. Lenin was arrested early Monday morning at his residence in the Apo area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Damilare Adenola, Director of Mobilisation for the Take It Back Movement, reported that the DSS raided Lenin’s home and that he was allegedly assaulted during the arrest. Adenola demanded Lenin’s immediate and unconditional release, condemning the treatment he received.
Attempts to reach DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya for comment have been unsuccessful.
Lenin, who is also the National Coordinator of the Youth Rights Campaign, had recently criticized President Bola Tinubu’s address on the protests. Lenin described the broadcast as out of touch with the realities faced by Nigerians, particularly criticizing the government’s response to the ongoing demonstrations.
Despite his arrest, Lenin has urged protesters to continue their demonstrations, emphasizing that the government’s attempts to control and suppress the movement will not succeed.
