In a move sparking widespread debate, activist lawyer Madubuachi Idam has called for the impeachment of President Bola Tinubu following the recent purchase of a new presidential jet. Idam urged the National Assembly to take action under Section 143 of the 1999 Constitution, arguing that the president’s decision to acquire the jet without seeking legislative approval constitutes grounds for impeachment.
Idam criticized President Tinubu for what he described as a “reckless abuse of public funds” at a time when Nigeria’s economy is struggling. He claimed that the purchase, made without the National Assembly’s consent, shows a lack of regard for the country’s financial challenges.
“The president has shown no pity for Nigeria’s economy,” Idam said. “He is engaging in extravagant spending, disregarding the suffering of the average Nigerian.”
Despite public outrage, Bayo Onanuga, a spokesperson for the president, confirmed the acquisition of the jet. Onanuga defended the purchase, stating that the aircraft was bought below market value, and that it would save Nigeria billions in maintenance and fuel costs in the long run.
However, Idam remains unconvinced. In a letter of protest, he pointed out that the National Assembly was either bypassed or uninformed about the transaction. He called on lawmakers to confirm whether they had prior knowledge of the purchase and to take appropriate constitutional action if they had not.
“If this transaction was done without even the pretense of seeking approval, it shows a blatant disregard for the rule of law,” Idam stated. “President Tinubu has consistently shown that his comfort is a priority, even in the face of economic hardship for the majority of Nigerians.”
Idam’s criticism extended to other aspects of Tinubu’s administration. He accused the president of prioritizing personal and governmental luxuries over the needs of ordinary Nigerians since taking office on May 29, 2023.
“From office renovations to purchasing cars for National Assembly members and now a new jet for himself, President Tinubu has shown little regard for the economic struggles of Nigerians,” Idam said. “The three existing presidential jets cannot all be unfit for use at once.”
He urged the National Assembly to exercise its impeachment powers as outlined in the constitution, arguing that this would be a necessary step to curb what he perceives as the president’s continued wasteful spending.
“The National Assembly must act decisively and restore its authority,” Idam insisted. “This is about more than just the purchase of a jet; it’s about setting a precedent that such reckless spending will not be tolerated.”
The controversy over the presidential jet purchase has added to the growing criticism of Tinubu’s administration, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over the government’s spending priorities amidst ongoing economic difficulties.
As the debate continues, the National Assembly is under pressure to respond to Idam’s call for impeachment, a move that could significantly impact the political landscape in Nigeria.
