Nigerian Army Officer Arrested with 485 Rounds of Ammunition Hidden in Dry Fish Cartons

A Nigerian soldier, Sergeant Saad Adamu, has been arrested in Borno State for allegedly possessing illegal ammunition. Adamu, who serves in the Nigerian Army under service number 05NA/56/385, was reportedly found with 485 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and two magazines, all concealed in cartons of dry fish.

According to a military report obtained by SaharaReporters, the arrest occurred at Njimtilo, along the Damaturu/Maiduguri Road. The report reveals that Sergeant Adamu, who is affiliated with the 3 Division Ordnance Services (3 DOS) in Jos, left his unit without authorization to carry out the illegal activity. During questioning, Adamu confessed that he had received the ammunition from another soldier, Sergeant Dalhatu Murtala, an armourer with the 19 Brigade Garrison.

The military report detailed the confiscated items, including 313 rounds of 7.62mm PKT ammunition, 172 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and two magazines. These were hidden inside a Bagco bag, mixed with cucumbers and cartons of dry fish to avoid detection. Both suspects and the recovered items are now in the custody of the 7 Division Provost Group for further investigation.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about internal security and the illegal flow of arms within the region. While the situation remains tense, military authorities have assured that morale and fighting efficiency among troops remain satisfactory.

This development is part of ongoing operations under “Operation Hadin Kai” and related military efforts in the area, aimed at maintaining security in the face of unpredictable challenges. Further investigations are expected to shed more light on the extent of the illegal arms racket.
