Sokoto High Court Grants Bail to Baze University Lecturer Detained for Supporting #EndBadGovernance Protests

The Sokoto State High Court has granted bail to Dr. Abubakar Alkali, a senior lecturer in the Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering at Baze University, following his detention by the Department of State Services (DSS). Dr. Alkali had been in custody for the past three weeks, accused of supporting the #EndBadGovernance protests.

The bail decision was confirmed by a legal source close to the case on Thursday, who praised the efforts of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and its Citizens’ Liberties Committee, as well as the Sokoto Branch of the NBA, for their support in securing Alkali’s release. The source expressed gratitude for the legal and moral support provided throughout the case.

Dr. Alkali’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, had earlier raised concerns about his client’s detention in a social media post on Saturday, September 14. Adeyanju stated that Alkali had been “abducted” by the DSS for backing the protests against bad governance and had been held in Sokoto since his arrest.

The #EndBadGovernance protests have drawn significant attention across Nigeria, with citizens voicing their frustrations over issues related to governance, security, and economic challenges.

Dr. Alkali’s release marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to secure justice for individuals detained in connection with these protests.
