The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) has pledged to implement the Supreme Court’s decision granting financial and administrative autonomy to local councils across Nigeria.
The Supreme Court ruling, delivered in 2022, declared that local governments are constitutionally entitled to autonomy. However, implementation has been slow, sparking concerns among local government officials.
ICPC Chairman, Bolaji Owasanoye, assured that the commission will work with relevant stakeholders to ensure compliance with the Supreme Court ruling. “We will leave no stone unturned in enforcing this ruling,” Owasanoye said.
Local government officials have hailed the ICPC’s commitment, citing its potential to enhance grassroots governance and accountability. “This is a victory for democracy and the people,” said Nwabueze Nwosu, a local government chairman.
The ICPC’s enforcement of the Supreme Court ruling is expected to boost local government revenues and enhance service delivery. It will also reduce the burden on state governments.
