The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), the leading socio-cultural organization for Igbo youth, has condemned the actions of the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding the treatment of Nnamdi Kanu. The council asserts that Kanu’s fundamental human rights have been violated amid ongoing legal challenges.
On September 24, 2024, Justice Binta Nyako declined to recuse herself from Kanu’s case, despite allegations of bias. Following this, Kanu’s legal team, led by Aloy Ejimakor, was denied access to their client on September 27 at the DSS office, reportedly on orders from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The OYC’s statement likens Tinubu’s actions to that of ancient Pharaohs, suggesting a resistance to the freedom of the Igbo people. The council expressed concerns that such actions could destabilize national unity, drawing parallels to historical events from 1967-1970. The council criticized the apathy of Southeast political leaders, including governors and lawmakers, who have failed to advocate effectively for Kanu’s release.
The council highlighted the broader socio-economic issues facing Nigeria, stating that the focus on the upcoming 2027 presidential election is misplaced given the ongoing injustices, inflation, and violence. The leaders called for a shift towards organizing a Constituent Assembly or Sovereign National Conference to address systemic issues, rather than merely preparing for the next election.
The OYC emphasized that discussions about the 2027 presidential election are superficial compared to the deep-rooted challenges Nigeria faces. They condemned the treatment of Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in DSS custody for four years, arguing that this reflects systemic marginalization against the Igbo people.
Furthermore, the council pointed out the inconsistency in Nigeria’s stance on freedom, citing Vice President Dr. Kashim Shettima’s support for Palestinian independence while denying similar rights to the Igbo community. The OYC called on the international community to scrutinize Tinubu’s role in Kanu’s detention.
In light of the deep-seated issues facing Nigeria, the council urged Tinubu to prioritize addressing marginalization against the Igbo people and to facilitate Kanu’s unconditional release. They expressed that failure to do so could lead to severe consequences, including widespread unrest similar to recent turmoil in Haiti.
The OYC concluded their statement by calling for immediate action to resolve these pressing issues to safeguard Nigeria’s future.
