In a bold and fiery statement, Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State, openly challenged the governors of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who are backing the current governor, Siminalayi Fubara. Wike, known for his outspoken nature, declared that he is “bigger” than those who oppose him within the party.
Wike’s comments came in response to growing political tensions within the PDP, particularly over the allegiance of some governors to his successor. The former governor firmly stated that those trying to diminish his influence in Rivers State would not succeed, saying, “Says detractors put together can’t withstand him.”
Wike further mocked the decision of Fubara’s camp to support the African Peoples Party (APP), highlighting what he perceived as a flawed political strategy. In his words, “I’m bigger than you,” an indication of his belief in his lasting political relevance in the state. His declaration has fueled speculation about a deeper rift within the PDP and raises questions about the party’s unity going forward.
Some prominent voices within the PDP, such as Governor Fintri, have come out in support of Wike. “Fintri: I’ll continue to associate with Wike,” the Adamawa State governor said, suggesting that Wike still commands considerable respect and loyalty from certain quarters.
However, Rivers indigenes have expressed concerns about the political divide. While some believe that Wike’s influence will remain strong, others have criticized his confrontational stance, fearing it could disrupt the state’s political stability.
