Cercle Brugge midfielder Lawrence Agyekum has expressed interest in representing Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles. Currently playing for the Belgian club on loan from Red Bull Salzburg, Agyekum, 20, has dual nationality, being born to a Ghanaian father and Nigerian mother.
In a recent interview, Agyekum confirmed his eligibility for both Ghana and Nigeria but expressed his willingness to play for the Super Eagles if given the opportunity. “My father is from Ghana, but my mother is Nigerian. I can play for both nations. If the chance to play for the Super Eagles comes, I won’t say no,” he said.
The young midfielder began his career at Ghana’s West African Football Academy before joining Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg in 2022. His loan spell at Cercle Brugge has been productive, with Agyekum featuring prominently in both the Belgian Pro League and the Europa League. He has already made 13 appearances for Cercle Brugge this season, including four in European competition.
Despite being registered as a Ghanaian player, Agyekum closely follows both national teams and wishes them success in their respective competitions. “I have love for both countries and want to see them do well,” he added.
Agyekum’s performance on the European stage continues to raise his profile, and a potential call-up to Nigeria’s Super Eagles could be an exciting opportunity for both the player and Nigerian football fans.
