Several people have reportedly lost their lives in a renewed conflict between herders and farmers in Adamawa State, Nigeria. The incident took place early Sunday morning in Kukta, a community in the Waltandi district of Song Local Government Area, local sources confirmed.
The recent violence reportedly escalated from previous tensions that began days ago. According to a community member, one farmer and one herdsman were initially killed, igniting hostilities. The conflict intensified at approximately 4 a.m. on Sunday, with reports that herders moved through the area, attacking houses and allegedly killing five people.
In response, Adamawa State authorities deployed security forces to the area to restore calm. The state’s police spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said that officers have been sent to maintain order and apprehend those responsible.
“The Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, has ordered the Homicide section of the State CID to carry out a thorough investigation into the clash that has resulted in the tragic loss of lives and significant property damage,” Nguroje stated. “The Commissioner is deeply saddened by the incident and promises the people of Song that justice will be pursued.”
Conflicts over grazing land are often heightened in pre-harvest seasons due to increased scarcity, and local officials stress the importance of addressing these tensions promptly.
