Enugu, Nigeria – The Enugu State Police Command has disclosed the identity of the inspector who shot and killed well-known Nigerian musician, Okezie Chikezie Mba, also known as “Igbo-Jah.” The inspector, identified as Joseph Ozonwanji, allegedly opened fire on Mba during a visit to the Anti-Cult Unit of the Enugu Police Command on Friday.
According to initial reports, Mba, who was at the police facility for an event, was leaving the premises when officers began firing indiscriminately. He was struck by multiple bullets and succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. The police stated that Mba’s visit was meant to be friendly, but Inspector Ozonwanji discharged his weapon at the musician “for reasons yet to be ascertained.”
The incident has prompted swift action from the Enugu State government. Governor Peter Mbah has ordered an immediate investigation into Mba’s death. The Enugu police spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed that Inspector Ozonwanji is in custody and will face the “full weight of the law” once the investigation concludes.
On Saturday, Enugu’s Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, accompanied by officials from the state government, visited Mba’s family to offer condolences. Uzuegbu reassured the family and the public that the investigation would be thorough and justice would be served. He emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to discipline and that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face consequences.
Mba’s death has sparked a wave of sympathy, as he was a well-loved figure in the community. Commissioner Uzuegbu urged the public to maintain faith in the police as they work to deliver a fair outcome in this case.
